Comparison between Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code

By Software Levi

Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code are both products of Microsoft. Although their names seem quite similar, but they are two very different software.

So, here is the comparison between Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code?

Comparison between Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code

Software Type

Visual Studio is an integrated development environment (IDE) while VS Code is a text editor. Therefore, Visual Studio has more features than VS Code. Moreover, Visual Studio is a closed source software that you have to purchase (except for the community edition which is free but has fewer features) while VS Code is both open-source and free.

Compatibility

Visual Studio only works only on Windows however VS Code is compatible on Windows, Linux and macOS.

Size and Speed

Visual Studio is quite heavy since it is an IDE and VS Code is lightweight since it is a text editor. Moreover, Visual Studio is slower than VS Code since it performs heavy tasks.

GUI designing

While Visual Studio provides drag and drop WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) GUI designer VS Code doesn’t. In Visual Studio you can design your interface simply by dragging different components of the interface and dropping them in their place. The code part is taken care by the IDE. This makes GUI designing a lot faster and efficient. On the other hand, in the case of VS Code you will have to design the GUI by coding.

Other Features

Visual Studio being an IDE has more features than VS code. For example, VS Code does not have full features of IntelliSense while VS has all of them. Both of them can be extended by downloading extensions but Visual Studio Code has fewer extensions than Visual Studio.

Conclusion

So, in short Visual Studio is a more powerful, feature filled and heavy software development tool. On the other hand, Visual Studio Code is a lightweight, fast, free and open source software development tool with a lot more features than your typical text editors.
